Hair tends to get dried out and frizzy in the summer, with all the UV rays, sand, saltwater, chlorine, and all manner of summer fun hitting your locks. In-salon Keratin treatments may just be your new summer love.
But what the heck is it? Keratin treatments use protein to seal the cuticle of the hair. This helps to get rid of frizz, and adds a glorious shine and softness. It also makes unruly hair much more manageable.
We even recommend trying it out after a color service, to lock in vibrant color and shine!
I made my appointment. Now what? Because each client has different lengths and textures of hair, salon time can vary anywhere from 1 to 3 hours. Your stylist will shampoo your hair to strip out any buildup or products prior to your treatment. The Keratin treatment will then be combed through, followed by a rough dry. After that, the treatment is blow dried and flat-ironed to complete the effect.
One thing to note, you will want to wait about 48 hours after your treatment to get your hair wet. This will provide the most long lasting results.
Will it work for me? Keratin treatments perfect for clients with coarse and frizzy hair. They can also help if you don’t like your curls, and tend to blow dry your hair smooth daily.
However, if you have fine, thin, straight, or very processed hair; this may not be the best course of action because of the heat from the blow dryer and flat iron. If you love your curly hair, you will want to stay away from it as well, as it can tone down your curl and pull out your wave a bit.
So, what’s the damage? Is it like getting a color? Keratin on it’s own is not damaging to the hair – it actually provides a lot of nourishment. The problem lies in the flat ironing, which is a necessary step to seal the product in. Your stylist can evaluate this. For example, if you have a lot of highlights, your stylist will use a lower heat setting to avoid unnecessary damage.
Treatment Complete. Now what? Your treatment will last anywhere from 3 – 6 months, and make sure you are using a sulfate-free shampoo. Most clients come back 2-3 times a year to keep their hair looking fabulous.
