Make sure your shampoo is sulfate free, and ph balanced (4.5-5.5).
Sodium laureth sulfate is an ingredient is used to help produce a foaming effect in many shampoos and conditioners. By using products with sulfates, you will strip your hair of its natural oils and moisture. These products can do damage your color, and they can also damage your hair.
Making sure your shampoo and conditioners are ph balanced is also important, because they keep your scalp and hair healthy. When your hair is healthy, and maintains natural moisture and oils, it extends the life of your color.
-
Wash your hair less often.
Washing your hair every day is something you want to avoid if you want keep your hair healthy. Not only are you rinsing away the natural oils that moisturize that keep your hair color looking fresh, you also wash away a little bit of the color itself every time you shampoo your hair! Try washing your hair every other day, or even 2-3 times a week to get the most out of your color.
-
Rinse hair in cool water.
When washing hair with hot water, your hair’s cuticle is opened – allowing your color to wash out while shampooing and conditioning. To prevent seeing all of your color go down the drain, try shampooing with slightly warm water, and then rinse with cold water after conditioning. The warm water will allow the shampoo and conditioner to penetrate and cleanse, while the cold water will help seal in the moisture from your conditioner, while preventing color from fading by sealing the hair’s cuticle.
-
Use leave-in conditioner, or do not rinse out conditioner completely.
Hair spray, styling products, heat tools and even the sun can dry out your hair and cause your colors to fade faster. Conditioners help to keep your hair color vibrant by moisturizing the cuticle of your hair. Using a leave-in conditioner or not rinsing out conditioner all the way keeps the hair cuticle protected, and saves your color from environmental stressors that can cause it to fade.
